It’s been a busy week with the kids going back to school, but I wanted to post an update to let everyone know what I’ve been up to. Wait. Did I tell you that besides being a writer and animal lover, I was also a mother of two? Well, now you know. It’s been crazy trying to get virtual learning set up for both of them, but I think we have it figured out now.
Aside from working on my next novel, I have also started proofing and light editing for a small publishing press. It’s been a great learning experience, and I’m eager to learn as much as I can to improve my own writing. I’ve also been reading a lot. In the last week, I’ve finished Richard Laymon’s Island. I always enjoy rediscovering a hidden gem, and the book did not disappoint the second time around. I also read Five Tales That Will Land You in Hell by Patrick C. Harrison III. For fans of extreme horror, this collection of stories is right up your alley. I’m currently reading Jack Ketchum’s Off Season. It’s been great so far.
As for my writing, I’m currently on Chapter 11 and sitting at roughly 23,000 words. I can’t wait to share this story with you guys; it’s been so much fun writing it. I’ve been pantsing this story, instead of going off an outline, and it’s been interesting. My characters seem to have a mind of their own and keep taking the story in directions I never imagined it would go. So far, this strategy is working. If all continues to go well, the first draft will be finished next week.
That’s all I have for this week. Stay tuned for more updates. Next week, I will be posting a short story for your enjoyment and to get a taste for my writing style. It’s one of my darker stories, but I think you will enjoy it. I wrote it about three years ago, but recently rewrote it to make it flow better. Don’t miss out on this thrill of a story. -E.B.
